Guest today is Jeremy Taylor, store manager for Home Depot/Office Max in Columbia. He was referred to the Downtown Optimist meeting by member Rick Mckernan. Mr. Taylor stated he attended today as he feels his business has a consistent philosophy to that of the Downtown Optimist Club (D. O. Club). Both work a lot with schools, give donations, etc.
Birthdays and Anniversaries
- Bonnie Langreder has a birthday tomorrow, January 8.
- Jack Cruise has a birthday today.
- Carl Scott has a birthday on Thursday, January 10.
Mystery Person
Ed Musterman awarded the mystery person to Sid Sullivan for all his assistance for the D. O. Club.

Cyrilla Galbreath stated she visited Dottie the other day at her home. She stated Dottie is doing well.

- Carl Scott paid the pig in memory of John Sapp, D. O. Club member who recently passed away.

- President Dewey provided awards (plaques) to the following D. O. Club Members in appreciation for their hard work in support of the D.O. Club:
- Ed Musterman – Two years as President;
- Sid Sullivan – Secretary duties;
- O. Scheffer – Ten years as Treasurer.

- Welcome to any new or returning members. None reported.
- Hopes everyone had a great Holiday break and enjoyed time with their families and friends.
- Let’s take this time and remember our Club member John Sapp who passed away on Friday, December 27. He will be missed.
- Stated the Tri-District Optimist (West Missouri, east Missouri and Kansas 2rd Quarter Conference on Friday, February 15 and Saturday, February 16 at the Adam’s Marks Hotel (9103 East 39th Street Kansas City, MO). If anyone is interested please let President Dewey know as soon as you can. Registration deadline is Friday, February 8.
- Stated we had a great year selling trees and Koeze Nuts/Gift Cards. She would like to thank everyone who came out and worked this year at the tree lot.
- Stated D. O. Club is sponsoring two Columbia Youth Basketball Teams this year. We are sponsoring a 1st and 2nd grade team and a 4th grade boys’ team. The 1st and 2nd grade team is playing at Beulah Ralph at 12:00 p.m. this Saturday. The 4th grade boys’ team is playing at 10:00 am at Gentry Middle School. If you have time Saturday please go out and support our teams. If you want a copy of their schedule please let President Dewey know and she can get you one. Both teams won their games this past weekend.
- Stated the Sunrise Optimists is holding a Wild Game Supper on Monday, January 7 at 7:00 p.m. at the Sunrise Optimist building, 2410 Parker St. This is an opportunity to try out different game meats and help support a local Optimist club. Cost is $15 at the door. The proceeds will support youth programs in Boone County.
- Stated if you enjoy pancakes then come out and support our two local Optimist Clubs:
- Ashland Optimist Club Pancake Day is on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at the Ashland Optimist Club House (511 Optimist Dr.) from 6:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
- Midway Optimist Club Pancake Breakfast is on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at the Midway Elementary School (8130 US Highway 40 West) from 7:00 a.m. to 10:30 am. Cost is $7.00 for Adults and $4.00 for kids (K-5th grade).

- President Dewey provided awards (plaques) to the following D. O. Club Members in appreciation for their hard work in support of the D.O. Club:
- Food Bank:
Larry Fick stated he received a report from the Food Bank that D. O. Club members volunteered a total of 300 hours last year. This included such members as Larry, Jim Murphy, Jack Cruise, Scott Stager and Carl Scott.
- Christmas Trees:
- O. Scheffer stated that things are all completed regarding the tree lot. He said there was some things learned from our experience this year with tree sales, including helping with planning for tree orders next year. He also added that D. O. Club spent less on tree marketing this past year than any other year since he has been involved in tree planning/sales. Tree lot clean-up is also completed.
- O. Club Annual Chili Cook-off:
UPDATE 1/8/19 from Steve Winters – Event will occur on 1/22/19 at the D. O. Clubhouse. Cook-off will start at 6:00 p.m. Cost is $10/adult. There is no meal charge for kids.
- Boys and Girls Club of Columbia Annual Rootin’ Tootin’ Chili Cook-off:
Scott Stager stated this event will occur on February 16, 2019. He requested additional assistance from the D. O. Club with funds (e.g., to reserve booth space) for our Club to prepare Chili at this event. It was recommended a proposal be submitted for D. O. Board review and approval to approve funds for our participation in this event.
- Computer Give-Away:
President Dewey stated that Rick Mckernan wanted everyone to know that the computer give-away is slated for February 20-23, 2019. We are looking for members to help with this event.
- January 28, 2019 D. O. Club Meeting:
- President Dewey reminded members that on January 28, 2019 the weekly D. O. Club meeting will be held at the Tiger Hotel beginning at 6:00 p.m. This is an opportunity for members who cannot make the noon meetings, due to scheduling conflicts with work, etc., can attend this meeting in the evening. Invitations have been sent to all D. O. members and other Optimist Clubs in the area.
