In Person/ Zoom Meeting

Monday, April 1, 2024 at the Optimist Clubhouse

Meeting began at 12:00 noon

Members in attendance: President Mike Hachett, Ed Musterman, Rick McKernan, Carl Scott, Jerry Sullivan, Daryl Stockhill, Scott Stager (Zoom), Steve Winters, Deb Swanegan, James Murphy, Rick McKernan, and Mary Dewey

Special Guests:  Pat Kelly, Dave Raithel, and Corey Dunn from TRYS Children’s Theatre

Birthdays/Anniversaries:  

Pay the pig (Money goes to the OIF Children Cancer):  Dave Raithel paid $1.00 for someone cleaning up his spot, Steve Winter paid $1.00 for his picture on the front pages of the Talker (Senior Citizen Center), Carl Scott paid $5.00 for Indiana State still playing in the NIT and a April Fool joke about Bill Self leaving KU basketball, and Mary Dewey paid $1.00 pictures on Facebook. Rick McKernan paid $.25 for KU

Kelly Schilling has club t-shirt for sale for $13 for member and free for new members

Boy’s and Girl’s Club Chili Cook off will be on Saturday, April 20th at the Holiday Inn Executive Center (2200 1-70 Dr. SW) Greg Schneider is the chair of. Please let him know if you can help out with handing out the samples of chili in the afternoon.

Jerry Sullivan on Saturday, April 6 the 1st Annual Pickle Ball Tournament. We have 40 teams. After the meeting he will need help bring items down from upstairs. Also will need help Friday night putting line down on three of the courts and take stuff over from the clubhouse to the Sports field house. Next year tournament will be on March 29th.

Rick McKernan talked about the Bill of Right Geo Cashing event that will be hosting this in the month of March. We will be put out the cartons on February 29th in 10 different parks throughout Columbia Parks, they will need to take a selfie of themselves reading the Bill of Right that they find in that park. After they find all the parts of the Bill of Right they will send them into us and we will pick the winner. All of the Geo Cashing are hidden and Rick has got some selfies sent in already.

Mary Dewey has signed up the Downtown Optimist Club with the other clubs in Columbia for Columbia Parks and Recreation Family Fun Fest. The dates are Wednesday, May 15: Bee Kind to Your Mind at COSMO Park, Thursday, June 20th: Junteenth Jamboree at COSMO Park, Wednesday, July 17:  Healthy Habits at Albert-Oakland Park, Wednesday, August 21:  Be Prepared at Albert-Oakland, and Wednesday, September 18: Creative Kids at Albert Oakland Park. The events start at 6 and will end at 8 pm. Set up stars at 5 pm. C.O. Scheffer will be sending out sign up Genies for this event please sign up to help.

Mary Dewey also has our annual Bike Safety Rodeo set for Saturday, April 20 from 9:30 to 11:30 am at Karis Church parking lot. C.O. Scheffer will be sending out sign up Genies for this event please sign up to help.

Our guest speaker: Member Spotlight Corey Dunn from TRYS Children’s Theatre (See attachment information) 

She grew up in Columbia MO went to Rockbridge High School where she took Children Theatre class.  She was in the musical Footloose. Went to Missouri State University in Children Theatre Education. Dunne began working for TRYPS in a professional capacity in 2006, serving as education director, production manager and executive producing director over the course of 10 years. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree and served as the education director at Studio East Training for the Performing Arts before returning to Columbia in 2021. She worked in the Office of Cultural Affairs before making the transition to executive artistic director.

Optimist Creed was recited and meeting adjourned at 1:00 pm
