Announcements from the Floor:

Today’s Speaker:

Valorie Livingston, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Clubs

Valerie shared a new video which introduces Boys & Girls Club.  Short but very uplifting.

She reported that their Robotic Club came in 2nd in local competition.

Local club serves 650 kids on an annual basis.

There need is great.  She reported that 45% of the children in the district are on free or reduced lunches.  That comes out to 8-9 thousand students.

They focus on work force development.  The local unemployment rate is below 1.7%. They need to teach trade skills.  Culinary and construction skills are some of their focus.

They have onsite programs in both Alpha Hart Lewis and Derby Ridge grade schools where virtually all students are on free or reduced lunches.  They were hoping to add a presence at Blue Ridge elementary this year, but a needed grant did not come through.

They serve 180 elementary kids at their main site (30 of those are from Blue Ridge).

They have kids related to victims of recent gun violence. They have mental health program to help them.  Active shooter drills have unfortunately become more important.  They are having to teach kids to “hit the floor”.

They are also dealing with the problem of kids vaping.  Vaping can be so well hidden that kids can do it in school practically under the gaze of teachers.

They are looking into partnering with Parks and Recreation to use the Armory as a place to help expand their capacity.  With an expansion they can serve more kids.

Their annual basketball tournament is coming up.   They need help to run it.  In particular they need adult volunteers to handle ticket sales and concessions.  Last year there were 50 teams from throughout the state.  It will occur on December 6,7,8.  They will be using courts throughout town.

She handed out a statistics brochure entitled “2018 Annual Impact Report”.  That report is available online as a PDF from their website under the “About Us” link.
