Greeter   – Ken Oster has missed the past few luncheon meetings due to his Valentine’s Day commitment followed by an unshakable cold. Ken’s barbershop group, the Booneslick Chordbusters, was engaged for 18 separate events to sing Valentine’s Day greetings. One memorable one was at a classroom in the Ellis Library at MU. With over 100 students in the class, the group showed up in tuxedoes, interrupted the class to sing an amorous ditty to one of the co-eds. Later in the week, Ken sat too close to a cold windy door at a local restaurant and caught a cold that kept in down for a couple of weeks.

• Sign In  No challenges on the sign-in sheet and name badges..

 

•  New Member recruitment event – C.O. reported the March 2^nd event at the Dog Master Distillery was a success. About twelve prospective members attended and two sign up. The recruitment drive will continue with the first Thursday April event specifics to be announced later.
• Oratorical – Rick McKernan reported this event went well. In took place at our clubhouse last Saturday morning and was cosponsored by the Hallsville Optimist Club. The winner of the event was Carli Cunningham from Fulton. Second place was first time speech giver, Erin Hill, from Columbia. Both will advance to the district level as Hallsville will sponsor Carli and our club will sponsor Erin.
• Essay Contest –Carl Scott announced that Dane Steinhauer, a Battle High School student, is the winner of the local Optimist Essay contest.
• Whiteman AFB Derby event update – Rick and Chuck will be attending this event taking place next weekend, March 11 and 12. Chuck Boots will attend as chief mechanic accompanied by Rick McKernan who will try to sell otherwise free tickets to our June 11 Soap Box Derby event. Rick was in touch with Lt. Governor Janet Schwano of Warrensburg to coordinate a new Optimist Club at Whiteman AFB. Carl Scott gave Chuck an Optimist Hat and Creed Plaque to present at this event.
• Soap Box Derby – Rick is still “selling” free tickets announcing the upcoming Derby taking place on East Broadway in downtown Columbia on Sunday, June 11 from 8:30 until hopefully only 4:30. The derby cars have all been assigned with a waiting list. Program book advertising and car sponsorships are still available. Rick announced a T-shirt design contest for this Soap Box Derby event. There is a Prize of $25.00 for the winning design.  At a minimum, the design must contain three things: 2017, Soap Box Derby and Downtown Optimist Club. • Food Bank – Larry Fick and Jim Murphy are still packaging cornflakes for the Buddy Pak’s for the Friday distribution. They could use a little help from the membership. Contact Larry at lfick41@centurytel.net/ .
• MU Baseball on Friday, March 31 at 6:30 Carl reminded folks the team was a great help unloading Christmas tree this past fall. Members are encouraged to sign up for a Baseball Game Day for group attendance. This is a great way to thank the team. Ticket price for a minimum group size of 10 is $3.00. • Bike Safety  May 20^th – Mary Dewey reports this event is still on schedule. There is still some room available for volunteers. Mary will circulate a sign-up sheet in late March and April.
• Art in the Park – Harold Rowe is back in circulation after surgery. Optimist will have a 2-10’x10’ tents directly adjacent to the Kids’ Art Tent where we will display Optimists events, especially Bike Safety and the Soap Box Derby. A Derby car will be displayed. Members are welcome to help recruit new members at this week end event, June 3 -4.
• Rootin-Tootin Chili Cook-off   Scott Stager circulated a plaque with the official picture of the Optimist Volunteer cooks at the Boys and Girls Fundraiser event.
• Scholarships  Cyrilla Galbreath reported she received the first batch of applicants (30 applicants from Rock Bridge H.S) Scholarships will be announced March 17. Volunteers needed for judging and reading applications. Contact Cyrilla (573) 999-0373.
• New Officer Election Committee Carl Scott announced the committee of Harold Rowe, Mike Hatchett, and Carl Scott will be scouring the membership for new officers and board members. Feel free to contact these folks with nominees for President, 1^st and 2^nd Vice Presidents and 2 new board members. Nominations are due April 24. Carl can be reached at cscottrun99@gmail.com/
• Carl Scott’s resignation from Board  Effective April 1Carl is resigning from the board. He will be leaving to care for his sister in Indiana. He will be sorely missed. He has been to go-to guy for volunteer events for members and for detailing club involvements. He leaves open the 1^st Vice President/President elect position.

 

 

Today’s Speaker

 

Jenny Flatt, Ed.D of The Family Impact Center was today’s luncheon speaker. She has been on the job since January, 2017. The Center is located at 105 Ash Street in Columbia. The signage of the building promotes the United Way but The Family Impact Center occupies 10,000 square feet in this building for its many programs and services.

 

The Mission Statement for this MU sponsored program is “To provide life-long education to improve the quality of life of individuals in the Columbia Community.” The center offers a wide variety of programs: Camp Salsa (partially sponsored by the DOC), Camp CA-Pow, Health, Finance, Building Strong Families, Project Homeless Connect, Estate Planning Clinic, Jump Start, and two new programs: Dietetics and Micro Loans for Kids. The various programs are staffed with MU intern students from a variety of disciplines including medicine, nursing, behavioral health, finance, nutrition…

 

Camp Salsa is an 8-week summer program for low income kids where kids learn the whole chain of food marketing for salsa. They grow the food with help from Columbia Community Urban Agriculture, cook the salsa supervised by MU nutrition interns and apply business principles to sell it through Columbia Farmers’ Market and Lucky’s. Camp CA-Pow is a program for twenty 6^th – 8^th grade students offered during spring break to enlighten the group on education after high school. They visit several college campuses including MU and Linn State Technical College. The Health Program offers services to uninsured kids for a variety of chronic disorders including diabetes, neurologic disorders and mental health. Financial counseling and free income tax services are provides for families earning less than $54,000 in the Finance Program. Graduate students provide monthly topics for Building Strong Families including setting goals, family strengths, managing stress positive discipline, working communications, kids and self-esteem and more. Child care and lunches are provided at these monthly sessions. Also, through its affiliation with Mizzou it provides MedZou and the Integrated Behavioral Health Center.  These are health clinics in the 1st ward put on  and staffed by students in the medical, pharmacy and mental health sciences.
